Giving a whoop about whoopie pies
Are whoopie pies “in” and cupcakes “out” this year? Perhaps. A local entrepreneur may be part of the reason as she is creating a lot of whoop-la. Berkeley Gunnell, of Aldie, and her mom, Marcia Wiggins, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, started a company called Whoopsies last November (http://www.whoopsiespies.com). Gunnell, 38, is a single mom who has help from her chief tasting officer son, 8-year-old Thomas, and is literally working night and day to build a business from “scratch”. She is often up baking until 2 a.m. and sleeps for a few hours, only to wake up at the crack of dawn to make sure that her whoopie pies are safely couriered into downtown D.C. to sell at the Red Hook Lobster Truck. In addition, she holds a “day job” as an event planner. But she is fulfilling her dream to build a business making the best gourmet whoopie pies with unique flavors.
