Breaux Vineyards welcomes a new winemaker
David Pagan Castano has joined Breaux Vineyards as its premier winemaker. Castano was previously the head winemaker of a destination winery on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. He comes from a family that has spent more than two generations in the grape growing and winemaking industry and his family owns Bodegas Castano, one of southeast Spain’s most prominent wineries. "We are very proud that we have been able to attract a winemaker of this caliber," said Christopher Blosser, general manager at Breaux. Castano started his winemaking career at his family's winery and 1,000-acre vineyard, and honed his winemaking skills in many of the world’s top wine-producing regions including Sonoma, California; Marlborough in New Zealand; Cotes-du-Rhône in France; Mallorca in Spain and, most recently, Lanzarote in Spain. "We were very impressed with his wines," said Jennifer Breaux Blosser, director of sales and hospitality at Breaux. "They exhibited great balance and finesse. This exemplifies his mastery of the craft and we are very excited and pleased that he is joining the Breaux family." Castano has a masters degree in Enology & Viticulture from Polytechnic University in Valencia, Spain and has taken post-graduate masters classes at the prestigious Ecole Superieure d’Agriculture d’Angers & De Toulouse, France. "My goal is to continue the quality winemaking tradition at Breaux Vineyards and to do my part to contribute to the growth of the rapidly expanding Virginia wine industry," Castano said. Castano and his wife have relocated to the area. He will begin working at Breaux Vineyards in May.
