Just ask the more than 20 employees at Updegrove, Combs & McDaniel, a firm comprising certified public accounts and consultants with offices in Leesburg and Warrenton. The firm has grown exponentially since its inception in Middleburg, when founder Sandra “Sandy” Perkins was the sole practitioner in 1976. Accountant and firm managing partner, Dave Updegrove joined the company in 1983. He claims clients have two main concerns: their health and their finances. One’s health and their finances can lead to anxiety, often leading to emotional stress that can oftentimes be cured by a professional. Therefore, he’s given himself the unofficial title, “the dollar doctor.” As accountants, you need to understand the importance of what people are dealing with, Updegrove said. Oftentimes there are underlying issues that you need to be sensitive to while remaining calm, confident and not adding to a person’s hype, he said. “You assure them there is something that can be done and you’re in it with them,” he said. The firm celebrates 35 years this year. Patrons can order a drink while seated around the bar from a server or they can order a cocktail and take it to their seat inside the theater. In addition to a concession stand, the grill menu selection may seem more expansive than most patrons are used to at a movie theater. Food items include Italian sausage ravioli, hand-made pizza, barbecue chicken nachos, chicken fingers, coconut shrimp and healthier fare including pita chips and hummus and frozen yogurt with fresh fruit toppings. When it comes time to settle in front of the big screen, the 12 theaters offer stadium-style seating with custom-designed, rocking seats, wall-to-wall curved high-grain screens, Real-D 3D cinema technology and D-Box seating. D-Box seating is a technology that introduces motion in the stadium seating – movement in the seats is concurrent with the action on the screen.
